Chris Stapleton On Seeing Kendrick Lamar At The Grammys

By  |

Did you know that Chris Stapleton was a fan of Kendrick Lamar?

The country crooner is set to perform at the 2022 Grammys on April 3. He is also nominated for Best Country Solo Performance for “You Should Probably Leave” in addition to “Cold” being nominated for Best Country Song. The latter is a songwriter’s award. Finally, he is also nominated for the prestigious Best Country Album award for Starting Over.

“The thing that makes getting a great nomination so special is that it comes from your peers,” he explained. “It comes from the people that you work with, not just in your genre of music but in all genres of music.”

Chris Stapleton added that if you have your trophy on display, everyone knows how prestigious and rare that is. “Even if they’re not in music, they know what that is. It means a lot. It means hopefully you get to keep on doing what you’re doing or maybe you’re doing something right.”

Chris Stapleton On Kendrick Lamar and His Grammy Performance

“One of the most exciting Grammys performances I got to see was the year that Kendrick Lamar did the giant flame,” he said. Stapleton is referring to 2016 at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. The rapper performed “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright.” His production began with him in a prison and ended with an unforgettable bonfire scene.

“That was one of the wildest and coolest,” Chris Stapleton added. “…One of the best performances I’ve ever seen. You could feel the heat coming off the stage. There was so much fire. There’s so much power in that performance.”

Another standout Grammy moment for Stapleton was when U2 performed and Bono threw out his sunglasses into the crowd. It actually almost hit him in the head. The moment he was referencing was from the 2018 show where U2 performed “Get Out Of Your Own Way.”
