Listen & Lyrics: ‘Detour’ By Maren Morris
Maren Morris takes an unexpected “Detour” on her new record, Humble Quest.
Firstly, Morris wrote the tune alongside Sarah Aarons, Greg Kurstin, and Laura Veltz. Secondly, this followed the first two singles (“Circles Around This Town” and “Nervous”) that she released prior to the album dropping. Furthermore, this marked her third full-length major label record.
Finally, the track is one of those rare songs that anyone on the planet can relate to. The lyrics speak about being scared and overcoming a new detour in life. Additionally, Aarons views the song to be one that everyone can sing along to.
“We laugh because it’s so funny that that happened to us,” she told The New York Times. “Like, ‘Remember when we wrote that song that every person and their child on the planet can sing?’” But the track has been neither a touchstone nor a millstone. “All we do is eat cookies and write songs.”
Maren Morris “Detour” Lyrics:
Used to take the roads without a twist or bend
Driving with my eyes closed I could see the end
I was going somewhere
Thought I’d find it when I got there
Not supposed to cry when all the skies are blue
But I was disappointed when I saw the view
So I threw my map away and that’s the way
I stumbled into you
I don’t mind, I don’t mind a detour
I don’t mind the wrong way home
I’m never lost
Long as your heart isn’t in the dark
And as long as I still get to be yours
I don’t mind a detour
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared
You seem so okay with being unprepared
We’ll take our time, enjoy the ride
What’s around the corner, I don’t even care
[Repeat Chorus]
Might take the long way
It ain’t the wrong way
Might take the long way
It ain’t the wrong way home
It ain’t the wrong way home
Might take the long way
It ain’t the wrong way
Might take the long way
It ain’t the wrong way home
It ain’t the wrong way home
[Repeat Chorus]
