The Story Behind ‘Nervous’ By Maren Morris
Maren Morris ushered in her new album era of music with the release of “Nervous.”
“The Middle” singer co-wrote the song alongside Natalie Hemby and Jimmy Robbins. It was Hemby who had the idea and approached her co-writers with it. Meanwhile, Jimmy had an electric guitar in his hands.
“So we went with that and it felt really roughed up,” she explained. “And like, we didn’t want to keep anything too slick with the production or the vocal. And it just felt like okay, let’s lean into this. Like really sexual, [an] empowering vibe of being like, you make me nervous. But like, how am I going to describe all the imagery, laden ways that you do this?”
Morris previously worked with the four-piece all star group of The Highwomen. Maren Morris previously wrote with Robbins on “The Bones” before co-writing three of her tracks on Girl. It was no surprise that the trio came up with a masterpiece.
“I just feel like writing with Natalie always brings out the most colorful lyrics,” she added. “We definitely went there on this song. And I also feel like vocally, I just got in the vocal booth and wailed on it. It was the first time I felt like I took the training wheels off in a long time and just got to belt it. So I’m excited to play that one live.”
Maren Morris ‘Nervous’ Lyrics
Putting my reservations out of service
Making me feel like every secret’s worth it, it’s working
Tryna hide my desire below the surface
How this part of me went undiscovered
Taking my heart out of its zone of comfort, like summer
By the time that it’s gone, you want another
Out of our clothes
Motion in slow, yeah
You take me
You take me in my feelings
Through the ceiling
Leaving my inhibitions exposed
You make me nervous
Tracing my body like you’re learning cursive, researching
Just how high your touch can take a person
Out of our clothes
Motion in slow, yeah
You take me
You take me in my feelings
Through the ceiling
Leaving my inhibitions exposed
You make me nervous
Out of our clothes
Motion in slow, yeah
You take me
You take me in my feelings
Through the ceiling
Leaving my inhibitions exposed
You make me nervous
Tryna hide my desire below the surface
You make me nervous
