The Story Behind ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ By Carrie Underwood

“Denim & Rhinestones” is the perfect anthemic track for Carrie Underwood.

The American Idol alum teamed up with David Garcia, Josh Kear, and Hillary Lindsey to co-write her new single. Underwood and Garcia also co-produced the song together.

“The song ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ is super fun, with a bit of a retro vibe – we just go together, like a sweet tea and a lemon, like denim and rhinestones.  You have these things that are great on their own and then you put them together and they just fit. That’s how this album feels,” Carrie Underwood said.

Garcia added that Underwood is “one of the greatest singers of our time” and commented about her power and control while in the recording studio being unparalleled.

“We had such a great time making this record, and it turned out exactly how we wanted it to,” he concluded.

“Like jet black and a Cadillac / Like Tennessee and a bottle of Jack / Dolly and a tape deck on the way back to home sweet home / Like Mama and the kitchen / Cooking supper on the stove / Like a sweet tea and a lemon / We go together like denim and rhinestones.”

Everything to Know About ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ From Carrie Underwood

The new single acts as the title track for Underwood’s upcoming ninth studio album. Underwood co-wrote 11 of the 12 new tunes with some of her frequent collaborators. Additionally, she worked with Michael Hardy and Lydia Vaughan for the very first time.

“We cover a lot of ground on this album.  We have a lot of songs that have a bit of a ‘throwback’ feel,” Carrie Underwood said. “But they sound super fresh.  I grew up listening to so many different kinds of music and that is extremely evident in this body of work.  These are musical influences that are all in me and work their way out, and I just decided this time not to get in their way.  I think this whole album ended up being a big reflection of me as a person and as an artist.”

The Christian-country music superstar counts her Reflection Las Vegas Residency as the catalyst for this forthcoming record.

“I was just ready to have fun and to write songs that make me happy to listen to and happy to sing,” she concluded.

Denim & Rhinestones marks the third album that Carrie Underwood and David Garcia co-produced together. They previously worked on her 2018 album, Cry Pretty, and her 2021 gospel record, My Savior.
