Bea Miller Releases New Album, Mr. Peaked In High School

8 years after the release of her sophomore album Aurora, Bea Miller has just released her new album, Mr. Peaked in High School, out now via Republic Records.

Across 13 tracks, Miller explores identity, reinvention and the complicated aftermath of experiencing success at a young age, looking directly at her past while confronting the pressure of figuring out what comes next.

Miller first entered the public eye on The X Factor in 2012, going on to build a successful pop career with the platinum-certified “Young Blood” and fan favorites including “Fire n Gold” and “Feel Something.” But her adolescence looked very different from most. Rather than attending high school, Miller spent her teenage years working, building a career and helping financially support her family. Years later, that experience became central to Mr. Peaked in High School and the question at the heart of the album: What do you do with the rest of your life when you’ve already had a taste of success that young?

“I think it’s funny to say, I’m Mr Peaked in High School, because then the rest of the lyric is, But I never even went, because I didn’t go to high school,” Miller shares.

Rather than distancing herself from her earlier career, Miller looks directly at the many versions of herself that came before. Throughout Mr. Peaked in High School, she tackles depression, relationships, insecurity, burnout and creative stagnation with the humor and self-awareness that have become central to her songwriting, allowing confidence and doubt to exist side by side without forcing either into a neat resolution.

That perspective unfolds across the album’s 13 tracks. “depressed on the internet” captures a period of isolation and doomscrolling as Miller confronts the disconnect between the life she once imagined and where she found herself. “born to lose” turns the fear of having already experienced her biggest moment into self-deprecating reflection, while “drunk enough” explores the uncertainty of an almost-relationship and the feelings left unsaid. On “L.A. UGLY,” Miller takes a more playful approach, turning a joke about being an “LA six” into a rejection of perfection and finding freedom in not needing to be the most desirable person in the room.

“I would have been remiss to not reference myself on this project, because it took all of the phases of my music and of myself to create this album. I wanted to make sure that I included almost tributes to the selves that I have been in the lyrics and even in some of the melodies and the musical sounds and choices that we were making. Because without those things and without those versions of me, we wouldn’t have this album. This album is what I’ve been leading up to for a really long time and building up to, and I just didn’t realize it,” Miller shares.

Created in close collaboration with Justin Tranter and producers Oak Felder, Shawn Wasabi and Dan Crean, Mr. Peaked in High School moves fluidly across pop, alternative and R&B with a live, band-driven energy. Many of the songs emerged organically from conversations between Miller and Tranter, turning offhand observations and personal anecdotes into lyrics that often move from funny to uncomfortably real.

For Miller, the album ultimately represents a new chapter that acknowledges everything that came before without being defined by it. “It was a lot of trial and error, and now I know exactly who the fuck I am and what I want to say and how I want to say that,” she says. “I don’t even really know what to compare it to in terms of my discography. You can see how we got here, but it’s leagues above everything in a lot of ways because I had to use all those things as a jumping off platform. It’s the thing I’m the most proud of so far.”

To celebrate the release of Mr. Peaked in High School, Miller will play a pair of album release shows, Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on September 18 and The Roxy in Los Angeles on September 25.
