James Cameron added another award to his name, a Disney Legend!
The award ceremony took place on Sunday (August 11) at Anaheim, California’s Honda Center. This coincided with the bi-annual D23 Expo.
The weekend’s festivities will conclude tonight with the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony at the Honda Center, where 14 remarkable individuals will be honored for their contributions to Disney’s legacy. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the event promises special guests and surprise performances that are sure to make a lasting impression. This grand Hollywood spectacle celebrates key figures in Disney’s history for their influence on storytelling and innovation. For those who can’t attend, the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony will be available to stream on Disney+ this Monday, August 12, at 5 PM ET.
James Cameron’s Career and Disney Legend Status
James Cameron is an acclaimed filmmaker, ocean explorer, and environmental advocate. As a director, writer, and producer, he’s responsible for some of the world’s most memorable films, including The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the latter three being among the highest-grossing films of all time. Titanic alone won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Editing for Cameron. He is currently in post-production on Avatar 3 and in pre-production on Avatar 4 and 5.
He then teamed up with Walt Disney Imagineering in 2011. Cameron helped create an Avatar-inspired area in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The result, Pandora – The World of Avatar. The land immerses guests in an interactive environment that brings the film series to life. It also features the popular attractions Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. Under his Earthship Productions banner, Cameron has produced 12 documentaries. This includes six about Titanic and three other deep ocean exploration films, most in partnership with National Geographic. He executive produces National Geographic’s Secrets series, including the Emmy Award-winning Secrets of the Whales and Emmy-nominated Secrets of the Elephants, with Octopus launching on Earth Day 2024. He also executive produced the OceanXplorers series, due in Fall 2024 from National Geographic.
