Towa Bird Stips Down ‘Sorry Sorry’ for Free People Session
Is there anything people like more than a Towa Bird song? Yes, a Towa Bird ACOUSTIC song.
Free People, a space dedicated to empowerment, education, and inspiration, released their new Free People Session today, featuring musician Towa Bird.
For the occasion, Bird stripped down her track ‘Sorry Sorry’ which was released on May 10, 2024.
“As a kid, I was pretty socially anxious, I didn’t really fit in in any of the social groups,” Bird shares ahead of the performance. “It’s interesting when you’re a girl and suddenly you’re taller than all the boys and you’re at the back of the school picture and everyone’s like *looks up*. And the boys kinda just hate you for that and then the girls are like ‘why are you so big’ like *sighs* poor me, you know? Like I’m so sorry.”
“Sorry Sorry” is featured on Bird’s debut album, American Hero, which came out on June 28, 2024.
“Especially at this point in my career, it feels like there’s a lot of exciting things coming in and a lot of opportunities and directions to give in and paths to choose,” Bird reflects at the end of the video. “And it’s so easy to get wrapped up in the excitement and the glamour of all of that, but for me, there’s a point to remember: the core of this is just making good music, that’s kind of all that really matters. You can go to all of these parties and take all of these trips but just make good music […] and people will enjoy it.”
ABOUT TOWA BIRD:
A half-Filipino, half-English artist who spent much of her childhood in Thailand and London, Towa Bird first started playing guitar at the age of 12, honing her technique by strumming along to The Kinks, The Who, and other bands she discovered through her father’s record collection. After forming her first band at age 14, she cut her teeth playing dive bars and street festivals in Hong Kong, then went on to study at Goldsmiths, University of London. Naming Jimi Hendrix, Joan Jett, and Prince among her longtime inspirations, Bird dropped out of school after two years to pursue her love of music and got her start producing and co-writing for other artists, in addition to posting videos that found her soloing over hip-hop, pop, and R&B songs. As her singular guitar style gained attention across the globe, she began sharing original music and soon after inked her deal with Interscope Records. Towa’s music offers an intimate exploration of queerness, identity, and the complexities of love. This fall, Bird promoted her debut album, American Hero, by supporting Billie Eilish on select dates of her North American ‘Hit Me Hard And Soft’ tour.
