Tom Morello Brings Out Son Roman at Mad Cool Festival: WATCH

By  |

Mad Cool Festival attendees were in for a treat tonight, when Tom Morello brought out his 13-year-old son, Roman, to perform alongside him.

Tom Morello was listed as a headliner this year, playing on one of the biggest of the six stages of this year’s edition. The iconic multi-genre festival took place once again at the Iberdrola Music Venue, in the Villaverde District of Madrid, Spain on July 10 – 13.

The father and son traded off on guitar solos during “Killing In The Name Of.” Roman donned a shirt featuring Lamine Yamal’s Spanish football team.

Tom Morello and Son Roman’s Musical Roots

Roman’s guitar skills first went viral in 2022, when his father shared footage on Instagram of him playing Rage Against The Machine‘s hit single, “Killing In The Name”. The footage, dating back to the band’s 2022 tour, was filmed in an empty arena during soundcheck. Roman was seen playing the song, accompanied by his father’s bandmates Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk.

Since then, the pair has taken the stage together a few more times. Most recently they performed “Soldier In The Army of Love” in Verona, Italy. The father and son co-wrote the single together.

Tom revealed to Guitar Interactive Magazine that his son created the guitar solo in their collaboration. Tom recalled when he walked by Roman’s room and heard him create his own “awesome Drop D heavy riffs.” Roman ended up creating the entire lead guitar solo, himself.

“I wish I could say it was me,” Tom admitted of the solo. During lockdown, when everybody else was baking bread, [Roman] was putting in his eight hours a day. So I’ve been relegated to be the rhythm guitar player in the family now.”
