INTERVIEW | JESSIA Shares All About Her New EP and Upcoming Tour

On July 16th, Canadian pop singer & songwriter JESSIA released her new, independently released EP, Okay With Every Part, a project in which the artist takes listeners on a journey of growth and change as she reflects on pivotal moments in her life.

After telling us all about each of the tracks, JESSIA shares more about the EP-making process.

SRS | Hi JESSIA! It’s been a while since we’ve had you on SRS. Last time we talked, you had just released your first EP. It’s been a wild ride since, how have you been since then?

JESSIA | It’s definitely been a wild ride! I’m releasing music independently now, which was obviously a major change. I have learned how to accept and embrace change over the past few years, which is what I explore on my new EP, ‘Okay With Every Part.’ The industry is constantly moving and you just have to keep moving with it.

We are LOVING the new EP! Can you tell us more about the creative process? What were the main ideas, themes and concept behind the EP?

Thank you! ‘Okay With Every Part’ is all about embracing change. It’s also about realizing what you deserve, finding the people you want to hold close to you, and cutting the dead weight. If anyone is feeling stuck in their life or like they’re looking for change, this EP is for you! 

What’s your favourite track on the EP? And which was the most challenging to write for you? 

I think “Care About Me” is my favorite song on the EP. It was the most difficult to write because it was so emotionally-charged and personal. I believed in it so much that it went through like 20 different versions to get it right but I’m so proud of that track and how it turned out! 

Okay With Every Part is an independent project, the first since parting ways with your label. How does one bounce back in times like these? 

I took time to heal. I continued releasing singles but I really took my time on putting together this full project. I felt like I needed to process everything before I could come out loud and proud as an independent artist. Realizing that I am worth so much more than a label title, numbers and streams really helped me heal.

Now that the project’s out there in the world, how do you feel? What would you say you’ve learnt from creating this project independently?

It feels amazing to have Okay With Every Part out! Creating this project took a lot of work and I learned how important it is to celebrate the small wins. When you focus too much on the big picture you can easily get burned out. Every day that I’m able to survive and keep making music for a living is a good day. It’s not all about numbers and followers and likes.

You’re heading on your first headline tour in the fall to support the EP! How excited are you? What song are you the most excited to perform live? 

Ooo good question! I would say either “Care About Me” or “Happy Without You.” Such different vibes but so fun!
