GEEK – Prononciation: /ɡiːk/ –
An unfashionable or socially inept person
A knowledgeable and obsessive enthusiast
Now, don’t go throwing rocks at me, for these definitions, as restrictive and old as they may be, come straight from the Oxford Dictionary. Throughout the years, the “geek” phenomenon has grown, evolved and spread so much that the term now includes fans of video games, but also of role play games, comics, animes, series and even more of what makes the popular culture.
And for the second year in a row, this community of fans will meet in Bordeaux, France next weekend, during the Bordeaux Geek Festival (BGF), and Stage Right Secrets will be right there with them!
The Mandora Association, in charge of the festival, had bet that about 20,000 fans would show up last year, and they won their bet easily. Hosted once again this year at the Parc des Expositions (Exhibitions Park), the BGF will take over more than 107,000 ft² of the building with stands full of animations, debates, conferences, meet & greets and of course, plenty of games (full program HERE)!
Overwhelmed already? You. Just. Wait!
This year, the association decided to put the emphasis on e-Sports with three tournaments, one for each of the following games: League of Legends, Hearthstone and Counter Strike GO. In addition to that, the association will organize contests in different categories, such as special effects makeup (see the finalists HERE) and cosplay, and will once again award some of the best Youtubers in the fields of Humor, Sciences, Video Games and Web Culture (voting is to be done HERE and closes 05/10). For those wishing to exercise a bit, the BGF will also offer initiations to several sports, including archery tag and medieval martial arts.
What a program, huh? But wait, it gets better!
Remember when we said the word ‘geek’ now includes comics-lover? Well, Youtubers won’t be the only ones attending the festival. DC Comics and Marvel’s very own Barry Kitson (Batman, Spiderman, Superman), Pere Perez (Batgirl, Action Comics) and Geoffo will be in the attendance, as well as other comics artists such as Álvaro Martínez (Aquaman, Batman Eternal), Miguel Sepulveda (Stormwatch, Red Lanterns), Alessandro Vitti (X-Men) and more. The full list of guests is available HERE.
We are SO excited!
