Patent Pending Review 12/16/12

When you think Christmas you think of Christmas carols right? Well not for the guys of Patent Pending, putting together a Christmas show in a matter of days.  They pulled together tourmates from their Bowling For Soup tour; Freshman 15, along with Marina City, and Knockout Kid.

Going into the Penny Road Pub, I hadn’t seen Patent Pending live before.  It’s hard to put into words how great of a stage presence they have. They’re always moving, engaging the crowd, and jumping.  One of the coolest things I’ve seen from any band is the guys of Patent Pending inviting each lead singer of the opening bands (Two of which they didn’t meet prior to the show) to sing a song with them.

One of the members actually flew in from Australia for the show.  To make things even cooler he saw someone dressed up like Captain America in the airport and claimed he “instantly felt safer.”  They crowdsurfed and even stopped the concert when a kid clapped off beat to the song, it was hilarious and had me tearing up from laughter along with the entire crowd.  I haven’t seen a band bring the audience into the set literally.

During a quiet part, lead singer Joe brought up a very personal topic.  After seeing someone he knew self-harm he brought up suicide and self-harm.  He made sure everyone knew that there is help and to get it if you are suffering with any of the issues or know someone who is.  Once again I teared up.

Making the mood lighter they split the crowd in half and Joe jumped down and had everyone mosh together.  It was crazy to see from the back.  He even brought the singers from the opening bands on the stage to do a sing off.  Which “no one does at a punk show.”  I couldn’t believe how versatile their set was and how appreciative they were toward the audience that they came.  If you haven’t checked them out yet and are a fan of the pop punk world you’re sure to fall in love with them!
