Our exclusive chat with LUCKY!

LUCKY! gets up close and personal across dimly-lit scenes decorated with glowing lights in his new video, “Shaquira”. The New Yorker takes viewers on a trip through his own confusing emotions in his upbeat mosaic of rap, pop, and R&B.

When did you realize music was your calling?
Music has always taken a different form in my life. When I was younger it was the trombone, when I was a teen it was the recording studio and poetry, and now in my twenties it’s being an artist.

How would you best describe your sound?
My dad jokingly called it “romantic rap, but I think he was onto something. I talk about life, love, and relationships and mix rap, pop, and R&B, so I think “romantic rap” is perfect.

Who are your dream collaborators?
I’d love to make a song with Stargate, those dudes are hit MAKERS! Pharrell is definitely in that mix. I also want a feature from 2 Chainz, and that will happen!!

Is there a possibility to see you perform your new music live?
May 15/16 at the Paper Box!

What are some albums that really shaped you as an artist?
I’m a huge Kid Cudi fan, so the Man On The Moon series really helped me throughout my life. I even have lyrics from “GHOST” tattooed on my chest.

Some other albums are T.I.’s KING, Kanye West’s 808’s & Heartbreak, and Graduation. I’m inspired by The-Dream’s earlier albums as well. Even some as recent as Bryson Tiller’s “Trapsoul”–new and old music will always shape and influence me.

What are your favorite places in New York?
My favorite place will always be the waterfront in Dumbo; it’s so peaceful there.
