Ed Sheeran Breaks Hiatus To Drop New Song, “Afterglow”

By  |

Many months after announcing his social media hiatus, Ed Sheeran took to Instagram today to give fans an early Christmas present: a new song titled “Afterglow”!

Almost a year ago to the day, the British superstar had taken over his various social media platforms to announce he was going to be off the radar for a while to “take a breather to travel, write and read.”

“I promise to be back with some new music when the time is right and I’ve lived a little more to actually have something to write about,” Sheeran had thus promised on Christmas Eve of last year.

Since then, the singer had only appeared on social media once. This past September 1, 2020, the songwriter had briefly come back to Instagram to announce the birth of his and wife Cherry’s daughter, Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, before promising again to be back when the time was right.

And it looks like the singer did live a little more!

Although Sheeran made it clear that this surprise track “Afterglow” doesn’t come with any ties to his next album, the song comes as a lovely Christmas gift to fans who hadn’t had any new music from him since his Collaborations Project in July 2019.

“Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you,” he captioned the snippet of the song’s official performance video posted on Instagram. “It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy ! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now, ciao x”

“Afterglow” is available NOW on all streaming platforms.
