Artist To Watch: Cali Rodi

By  |

Singer/Songwriter, Cali Rodi, recently released her new single “Cake” and we are currently obsessed with it! We got to chat with Cali about the inspiration behind her new single, her musical influences, and what’s next for her. Meet Cali!

SRS: What was the inspiration behind your latest single “Cake”?

Cali: “Cake” was inspired by a relationship I was recently in where I caught feelings for somebody who wasn’t ready to commit. Yet he still wanted to have me all to himself all while actively seeking out other people. “You can’t have your cake and eat it too” is such a common saying, and I thought it would be fun to twist it and use words relating to sugar and sweets to tell my story.

SRS: Your music promotes female empowerment, which is exactly what the industry needs right now. Who are some other female artists you’re listening to right now?

Cali: Yes! There are so many I’m obsessed with. Cardi B is definitely a favorite right now. I’m also loving Tove Styrke, Kim Petras, Bebe Rexha, and Betty Who.

SRS: You are signed to Keith Urban’s publishing venture, BOOM. What has that experience been like?

Cali: It’s been a dream come true! Keith was always a guitar hero of mine, so to have his support is surreal. I used to play his songs “Stupid Boy” and “Somebody Like You” in my hometown bar gigs growing up. I also got to have my signing party at the American Idol finale when he was a judge, which was insane… I’m such a fan of that show. I’m so thankful for this opportunity to write songs as a job. That still blows my mind every day.

SRS: Did you always want to pursue a career in the music industry?

Cali: Always! My parents had a baby book and when I was three one of the questions asked what my favorite song was. I said, “The ones I make up.” Not much has changed, and I haven’t stopped chasing my dreams since.

SRS: Who are some artists you grew up listening to?

Cali: Growing up, you couldn’t see my bedroom walls. There were only Britney Spears and Hilary Duff posters. They both paved the way for my popstar dreams. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were my idols because they played guitar and wrote songs. I also know every word to every Paramore song.

SRS: What’s next for you?

Cali: I spent the last year and a half hibernating in studios writing songs to release for my artist project. I’m so proud of what I created and I can’t wait for you to hear them. The majority of these songs are almost finished, so they’ll be seeing the light of day very very soon! I also have a music video for “Cake” on the way that I’m so excited about. It’s the perfect visual aesthetic to the song.
